Adrian Mutu had agreed an £18m move to Roma before Fiorentina pulled the plug. Susy Campanale thinks everyone comes out of this badly

“I am not one who gambles, I like to play with my cards on the table. In the last few hours I have received an official offer from Roma,” announced Viola director of sport Pantaleo Corvino on Tuesday evening. “Taking this into consideration, it is my job and that of Fiorentina to meet with the club making the inquiries.”

All well and good until we realise that 24 hours later, after the Giallorossi had agreed economic terms and signed contracts, Tuscan patrons Andrea and Diego Della Valle called a stop to this or any other transfer.

The way Fiorentina dealt with this situation means everyone came out red-faced. Roma were publicly humiliated when the fans were already celebrating the new signing. Mutu is stuck in a halfway house with the knowledge he had completed the deal and was held back, so no amount of joining in with anti-Giallorossi chants (which he did during last night’s friendly) will disguise the fact he’d rather be elsewhere. And the Viola proved they are massively disorganised with the director of sport, Coach and President unable to even pretend they are a united front.

Why did Corvino have to announce to all and sundry that they were considering the offer? If the response arrived 24 hours later, would it not have been smart to keep it under his hat until consulting Cesare Prandelli and the Della Valle brothers? Roma seemed genuinely taken aback by the revelation, as newspaper speculation is one thing, but making it known they had made an official bid is quite another.

I never thought I’d say this, but it makes you long for the likes of Luciano Moggi. Part of the fun was knowing he was lying to your face about Juve’s transfer targets and the state of negotiations. Who can forget his sensational swoop for Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was waving other candidates in front of journalists’ noses like a shiny fob watch? His methods when dealing with referees may have been, well, unorthodox, but he was a master of the transfer market.

Honesty is not always the best policy on the transfer market, as you often end up looking like a chump.
